Bem-vindo à South Pantanal in Mato Grosso do Sul!
The Pantanal is a truly amazing place – an ecological hotspot like none other, this immense wetlands in Brazil support an incredible array of wildlife. Known for its exceptional birdlife and great fishing, Pantanal’s flat terrain and wide open spaces present an unparalleled opportunity to observe exotic animals in their natural environment. When it comes to adventure and connecting with nature, few other places have so much to offer in combination with lovely South Pantanal hotels for comfortable accommodation.
Though the Amazon seems to get all the fame and notoriety, the Pantanal is really the best place in the Americas to observe wildlife in its natural habitat!
Located in the floodplain of the Paraguay River and its tributaries, the terrain encompasses savannas, rivers, lagoons, meadows, seasonal and perennial wetlands and gallery forests. The landscape is shaped by the annual floods (January-March) that submerge much of this low-lying area and in turn nurtures its rich biodiversity.
South Pantanal, which accounts for two-thirds of the Pantanal, is located in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul in south central Brazil; take a look at the South Pantanal map for a visual idea of the region’s layout. Distances are huge and travel options, by road in particular, are limited especially during the rains. Small planes, 4-wheel drives and boats are what you rely on for Pantanal transport. The state capital Campo Grande acts as the main gateway to South Pantanal and provides access to the towns of Aquidauana, Miranda and Corumba. These are the only notable towns in the sparsely populated South Pantanal and also the best hubs for Pantanal Sul tours into the interiors. You find an interesting mix of races here which include Bolivians, Paraguayans, Italians, Spaniards, Arabs and Japanese apart from indigenous Indians.
Fazendas, big ranches and cattle farms take up much of the land area in the Pantanal. Many of them provide guest accommodation and offer activities like horse riding and Pantanal trekking, and organise fishing trips, boating expeditions, and other South Pantanal tours. Eco-resorts, lodges, pousadas, Pantanal Sul hotels and boat-hotels are the other accommodation options available.
Most visitors prefer to arrive during the dry season (April-October) when it is cooler and easier to get around. However, animal sighting is good throughout the year, even during the wet season (November-March) because animals clump together on small islands formed by the rising water levels, making it easy for an organized South Pantanal tour to track wildlife for outstanding Pantanal photos!
Whether you are an adventure seeker, a nature lover, avid photographer, birder, fishing enthusiast or someone looking an enjoyable experience in the lap of nature where myriad birds and exotic animals cavort in their elements, South Pantanal is the place to be with countless things to see and do!
